El Audemars Piguet Royal Oak fue diseñado por Gérald Genta y se presentó en 1972. Se considera el primer reloj deportivo de lujo y es el modelo más conocido de la manufactura, que se fundó en 1875 en el Valle de Joux y tiene su sede en Le Brassus. En 1984 llegó un Royal Oak con calendario perpetuo y en 1986 una versión esqueletada.
