El Audemars Piguet Royal Oak fue diseñado por Gérald Genta y se presentó en 1972. Se considera el primer reloj deportivo de lujo y es el modelo más conocido de la manufactura, que se fundó en 1875 en el Valle de Joux y tiene su sede en Le Brassus. En 1984 llegó un Royal Oak con calendario perpetuo y en 1986 una versión esqueletada. The beauty and finesse of the mechanism are revealed by removing as much as material from the mainplate and bridges as possible to let light pass through, without impairing its functions.
